If you are new to affiliate marketing, I would bet a million dollars that you have been exposed to mass marketing. If you just read the definition of mass marketing, you can probably understand how mass marketing can derail you on your mission.
What is Mass Marketing?
An attempt to appeal to a large market with one basic marketing strategy and sending it out to the masses.
Mass Marketing is basically playing a numbers game. If they put enough hype and send it out to hundreds of thousands they will score. The thing about us affiliate marketers is we are very diverse in our niches and these strategies aren’t a one size fits all.
The trouble is they are packaged up in shiny packages in the promises of more traffic fast, higher paying clients and products, and quick riches, better known as hype. Most advanced marketers understand that most purchases are made from a place of emotion. Their marketing campaigns make you feel emotions from fear to hope. The result, you buy!
How mass marketing kills it for newbies is it becomes a distraction or diversion. The get this shiny new object, open it up and try to implement it. Maybe it was a list building program. If you are new to affiliate marketing, chances are good you don’t even mastered the driving of traffic to your blog. Then you start working on building this list and get no sign ups because you don’t have the traffic.
The sales funnel is a trending mass market product currently. Now sales funnels do have their place, I won’t deny that. Their place is with those that are a bit more advanced. Again, if you haven’t even mastered the traffic driving to your site down, who is going to land in this sales funnel? Won’t do you much good.
Mass marketing in the retail world is done by large cooperation with large sums of money to spend on advertising. It’s the same in the online world. Chances are good you found a mass marketing offer because of some paid advertising. The one thing these mass marketers don’t share with you is the dollars they spend to get that offer in front of you in the first place.
Other than being a distraction for those new to affiliate marketing, it often ends up being a hope killer despite the hyped up claims. You buy it and think wow, all those other people made it work, why can’t I? Then you do the comparing thing and feel you aren’t making money fast enough and this is where many give up. The throw in the towel.
I had a new client to my pajama affiliates not very long ago. I will call her Claire. She wanted to go into the dating and relationship niche. She claimed it was her dream. First though, she had this thing in her head that she had to be making $100.00 bucks a day before she started. She bought into this program that involved paid advertising and promoted an affiliate offer.
So Claire prolonged her dream website. She made some money, but guess what. When she stopped the advertising, the money stopped as well. She was now 3 months out and still hadn’t started building that dream she had. By the way, if you have a dream, don’t put limitations on it or put it off. Start it now!
Moral of this story. Claire has now lost her enthusiasm. I haven’t heard a word from her in months. Had she just built that site, focused on her content for now and followed the plan that I was laying out, she would be seeing some money by now.
If you are new to affiliate marketing, this is how mass marketing kills it for you. Stay focused and don’t quit. Learn the basics first and get the ball rolling, then you can take it up a notch with some other techniques.
I teach affiliate marketing here at Pajama Affiliates. I don’t do mass marketing, so if you are looking for the shiny silver bullet to get you there, I am not your girl.
