How Long Does It Take To Make Money Blogging?
A lot of people come to me and ask me how long is it going to take before they see money from blogging?
It does take time to have a profitable blog, but so many are doing it!
Blogging is like any other business except your overhead is very low (very, very, very low).
Not many start a new business and go from in the red to in the black before 2 to 5 years but with blogging, its’ different.
In my honest opinion and from my experience, bloggers should see some sales, even if it’s just a handful by the 6-month mark.
Bloggers who don’t make any money don’t usually have:
- failed to target a buyers audience or a specific audience
- choose the wrong products for their audiences needs.
- go way too broad and many of the topics on their blog aren’t relevant to one another
- do not know how to write to convert sales.
- used weak calls to action.
- been focused on followers and not conversions.
- been listening too many people not making a lot of money themselves.
There are Three Main Ways to Monetize a Blog
Linking to relevant products of Vendors like Amazon Associates program, which pay you a percentage of the sale is one of the top ways to start making money with your blog. This can be implemented right away and most bloggers make their first dollar through affiliate marketing.
Using ad networks like Adsense is popular. Note you do need to have a good bit of traffic to see any major cash here. Once your traffic reaches high volumes there are ad networks other than Adsense that do pay more, such as Media Vine. Don’t count on ad networks too much in the beginning.
Your own products or services:
Creating your own products or services is a great way to make make money on your blog. Having an established following helps this along. This may be something to think about later on if you are wanting to make money sooner rather than later.
Keywords and Seo
Keywords alone won’t help you if you have limited knowledge on SEO or what your targeting audience wants.
You can start out with some information that may set you on the right path to getting it right and building a strong sustainable business blogging for money.
Has it been six months and you’re still not making sales?
Do you wonder what you’re doing wrong?
If you have found this post and have been blogging for a while without making any or little money, you may need to have a change of mind regarding what you think blogging is.
I get plenty of people that come to me making no money who want to defend their process, but the truth is, the proof is in the puddin’ doll. No money, no worky.
I have been doing this a while now and have found that it’s the older “more experienced” bloggers are the ones that are often the toughest to get onto the money making path because they get so dang set in their ways.
So many bloggers out there start out worried about branding and all the while they have no idea how to target their market or use a keyword for Pete’s sake. Well great, now you have a brand that no one cares about or will ever see – what good did that do ya?
Don’t Resist Change and It’s Costing You Money and YEARS of Your Life!
It’s human nature and I get it. Change isn’t easy.
But if you don’t change you’re going to be stuck on the hamster wheel with very little to show for it.
Don’t think that I don’t understand…
- I understand that you have been blogging for years on topics all over the place and narrowing down your focus is not easy.
- I understand that it has been drilled in your head that you need to get more followers, but followers are not buyers!
- I understand it’s easier to just go back into the groups with the other old bloggers who aren’t making money because you are comfortable there.
- I understand that really buckling down and learning new things like how SEO really works seems overwhelming.
- I Understand You Could be in Denial!
How Long Does it Take to Make Money by Blogging?
Not near as long if you grasp the following …
1. Forget about Getting Followers to Blog!
Yes seriously, forget it.
Followers aren’t buyers.
This is not 2009 when all the rage was getting followers.
If followers are what you seek, you are treating this more as a hobby than a business and your perspective needs to shift.
This business is not about followers – it’s about targeted audiences!
Don’t even get me started on signing up for a newsletter on a broad site like this. It doesn’t even make sense.
I see so many buying into the concept of you follow me, I will follow you.
This is not marketing, this is more like a popularity contest.
It will not bring you sales.
It may bring you traffic, but traffic isn’t worth much if it’s not converting and this kind of traffic is doing you no favors.
Lots of followers are not what works now.
Followers are only buyers in a small number of niches. A very small number.
2. Target a Buyers Audience!
This means actually knowing who your audience is.
If you write a post on gardening and I land on your blog and then there are other posts on things like fashion, cooking, home decor, you have failed me.
If I am looking for gardening, I am probably not interested in the rest.
I could be a man and the rest of your blog is things that are no interest to me whatsoever.
To target a buyers audience, you need to understand your reader and where in the buyer process they are.
Are you writing for those in the research stage or are you writing for those who have their wallets out and are ready to make a purchase?
Do you even know the difference?
All keywords are not equal, all keywords are not buyer keywords.
3. Narrow Your Focus!
This means find a niche and stick to it.
Don’t have a zillion different topics on your blog.
If I am into gardening and I land on your blog, turn your blog into a paradise for gardening.
Go more narrow if you can, like vegetable gardening, even better, “vegetable gardening in small spaces.”
Not only will your site had more power to rank in the search engines like this, (Google loves loves relevancy) but people will actually land and stay and buy from your blog.
They will trust you because you are an authority in this niche.
I can’t stress the importance of this enough, broad blogs don’t make significant money in short periods of time.
4. Learn To Convert Sales the Right Way!
A blog post needs to be visually appealing, and easy to read.
It needs to deliver on what the reader is searching for.
It needs to have clear calls to action.
There needs to be links in areas where you know the reader is going to want more information about something.
It needs to have affiliate products relevant to the post (but not lame).
There’s a lot more to making sales than just throwing a bunch of links up – trust me!
There’s an art to writing a blog post that actually converts sales.
5. Learn and Implement On Page and On Site SEO!
On page SEO is pretty easy or so most think.
They find a good keyword and do all of the things that you can possible do on the post to rank.
Many do this and actually rank yet still don’t make a lot of money because not all keywords are buyer keywords.
Some choose keywords that may look good in a keyword tool but don’t research it any further than this. Some don’t research their keywords or even use a keyword tool.
If you have mastered the on page seo, but haven’t managed to optimize your site as a whole you are leaving money all over the table.
Are you interlinking? Are you staying on topic with every single post? These are the things that really matter if you want to have good SEO on your website.
Everything needs to stay relevant, interlinked, updated and written with a buyer keyword in mind.
A strong, targeted, optimized site’s post will consistently rank higher over and over again.
6. Hang Out With Like-Minded Bloggers
You have got to hang out with winners if you want to be a winner. Success breeds success in this business and if you’re hanging out with a bunch of bloggers who are struggling and wandering aimlessly – stop it.
This is a real business and you need to take it seriously if you want to take your family on that trip, pay those extra bills at home and get little Susie those dance lessons.
Find yourself a good blogging group with valuable information in it, usually these are paid groups, but well worth the investment because it fast tracks the learning process.
So How Long Does it Take to Make Money by Blogging Really?
That is really up to you.
How many things on that list up there are you willing to take seriously?
It’s about writing good relevant, compelling content that people are actually searching for.
It’s about technique.
A blogger that takes the time to educate themselves will get there a lot faster.
