Groceries are a restricted category for Amazon FBA sellers. Most sellers on Amazon want to branch out into these restricted categories, but the approval process can be confusing. My best friend, Susan wanted to expand her Amazon business to make money selling groceries on Amazon. She just got approved last week so let me share her process to help you do the same.
First, you need to be an FBA (fulfilled by Amazon) seller. This means you are paying the $39.00 per month to Amazon to have a professional account. Your account also needs to be in good standing. If you are brand new, you most likely want get approved. You will need a few transaction under your belt first. If you are new to selling on Amazon, you may need to wait a few months before applying to sell groceries on Amazon.
First you will need 3 receipts from big box stores like Walmart, Target, Walgreens and so forth and so on. Each receipt needs 10 of the same item. This show Amazon that you are buying to sell and not for personal consumption. You can buy inexpensive grocery items for this, like a packets of gravy mix or something.
What you need to get approved to make money selling groceries on Amazon.
Each receipt needs to have the following:
- Your Business name. You can put your name dba your Amazon business name.
- ASIN and UPC number. Many receipts already have the UPC number.
- Prices need to be blacked out.
- Stores contact information
If you have a scanner, you can scan these receipts to your computer, upload them into a photo editor like picmonkey and add information that is not already there. In picmonkey, you can also black out your prices. Resave the three documents to your computer, go to seller central and apply.
If you don’t have a scanner, you can do like my friend Susan did. She typed the information onto her receipts with a typewriter. They do still exist. Then she taped them to a piece of paper, added her contact info, took a picture with her phone and saved it that way. There are many ways to do this, just do what is easiest for you.
Amazon will ask if you have a website, but it’s not required. Approval time is usually less than 24 hours. Now you can go out and make money selling groceries on Amazon.
