I have been blogging and running an online business now for about six years. I have ups and downs, but there is one struggle that I constantly face. It’s my unwillingness to follow what the big marketing gurus tell me to do.
I had a not so good experience today with one of these gurus. I landed on a page that I was very interested in the product. They offered the product for $7.00 bucks. I thought, my lucky day. So I got the link, went to the product and oh boy, I couldn’t even view it until I went through a long ass sales video pitching their membership area. I couldn’t shut the video off, fast forward, nothing. Total waste of my time.
Then I finally got to the product and started watching the video. I was instructed to pause the video if I didn’t have such and such and click on the link below to download such and such. I clicked on the link and guess what. Such and such was $47.00 bucks. Finally after going through the videos to the best of my ability, I discovered that to do what I wanted to do, I needed to do what they were doing which was mislead, and market with hype and promises. An elaborate sales funnel. Ughh.
Had I actually bought everything I needed to get what it was that I really wanted, which wasn’t what they had delivered by the way, it probably would end up costing me hundreds of dollars.
This is what the gurus call a sales funnel. Not no, but just hell no I won’t do it. If I have to do this to get customers just no thank you. It doesn’t feel good, it doesn’t feel valuable and it just stinks. Do you want to know how I really feel?
Why I won’t do a sales funnel.
Oh I am sure a lot of money is being generated with these sales funnels no doubt about it. But where is the person, the real interaction, the human touch? Call me old school, but this doesn’t resonate with my core values nor who I really am and at 52 years old, I am pretty sure now of who I am. I am not at all opposed to building a list and offering up some good useful products to my customers from time to time or sending them helpful information. I am working on a list now believe it or not.
Now there is one thing I want to point out to newbies out there getting caught up in this sales funnel stuff. If you don’t have the traffic, what good is it going to do you? Do you think you just create it and the money comes because you have it? Nope, you will need to advertise or be very very good at SEO.
So you see my struggle in reaching the next level in my online business. I am not willing to put up a video where I tell you I will be taking it down in such and such a number of days. I am not willing to have a voice that says “wait”, before you click off my page and then come in with another offer. I am not willing to just treat my customers like a number. I am not willing to offer you a free piece of non helpful information just to get your email so I can spam you with my offers over and over. I am not willing to use hyped up marketing period.
So how does a teacher like myself who teaches people real ways to make money online doing things like blogging brand herself for who exactly she really is and grow her business. Dear readers, I would love your input.
If you would like to see my no hype sales page for my blogging course, here it is, but warning there is no sales funnel in place.
