How can you start affiliate marketing without a website? Most think you must have a website to get started. If you are brand new and don’t know where to start, a website may not be the best idea until you know the ropes of the business. There is a way you can start affiliate marketing without a website that will lay a strong foundation for you further down the road.
When I started affiliate marketing, I had no clue how to build a website and honestly, the thought of it intimidated the hell out of me. I now know it’s really not that hard to do, and you can quickly make a WordPress website from scratch, but when you are brand new, it’s not the greatest idea. It will come easier to you and you will have more clarity if you get a bit of experience under your belt first.
I started out with affiliate marketing on free sites with just a domain name and an affiliate product in mind to promote. While I don’t use free revenue sharing sites much now, it was a great training ground for me. I learned how to get found in Google and a lot about SEO. You will need to know SEO and keyword research for when you do start that website.
Why Do I need a domain name to start affiliate marketing without a Website!
This is a trick I learned a long time ago, and it’s also something that seems to confuse my coaching students the most, so I will do my best to make this as clear as possible.
You are going to need a domain for now to point to the affiliate product you choose to promote. This is going to save you so much time down the road and has so many benefits. If you choose a domain that you can use for your website later down the road, all the better, so let me explain.
Affiliate links for starters are not usually pretty. They look like mumbo jumbo, even when you use a url shortener, they still don’t make sense. Take for example I find a product on clickbank that I want to promote. In 2010 when I was still a newbie affiliate marketer, I bought the domain name, textingtipsformen.com. A bit long in hindsight I know now, but let me tell you what I did with it.
I found an affiliate product on texting that was for men. I forwarded that domain to the product which is really simple to do. So when I wrote articles about tips for men texting, instead of putting the affiliate link where I wanted people to click, I put my domain name, which did the exact same thing.
I wrote article after article linking to my domain name which was now actually the affiliate product. If the product wasn’t converting, instead of having to go back an edit all those articles, all I had to do was go to my domain dashboard and point the domain to a different affiliate product. Ta Da, no editing, all links just now go to a new affiliate product. I made some decent money by the way without a website using free sites such as blogger for example.
Fast forward to 2014. I decided it was time to build my website for men and texting. I used that very same domain name, and now, ta da, every single article that I had out there online now pointed to my website. I had backlinks already in place for my brand new website and began getting traffic immediately.
This is why I recommend a domain name sooner rather than later if you already have your niche decided. You can still use it and it can get some age on it while you get clear on what you want to do and while you learn the ropes.
Also please note that some of the free sites won’t allow a direct affiliate link, but they will allow a domain name which you own. Long term, yes I do suggest a website. Until you know what your are doing, how to get traffic, how to write a blog post that has on page seo, and utilize keywords, a free site such as blogger or revenue sharing sites is a great place to get your feet wet.
