If I had one top tip for affiliate marketers it would simply be don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Please learn from my mistakes. This goes not only for driving traffic, but for the platforms that you use to market.
I will start with the traffic sources that you are going after. My tip for affiliate marketers here is simple. Diversity. I know many of us focus completely on Google traffic and yes we all want traffic from the search engines. Search engine traffic is good. The down side of this as many a marketer has discovered is it can flip overnight. Let me explain by sharing a couple of my own examples.
An example of this is I had a few blog posts that ranked for months and months in the first place on the first page of Google. Well one morning I woke up and traffic to one of those blog posts had dropped by almost 800 visits a day. I don’t know about you, but 800 visits a day is a pretty big hit to me. I was knocked out of the first spot by a new affiliate marketer on the scene. It reflects in my money as well. Had I spread my traffic out more with other sites such as social media sites such as Pinterest, Facebook, Youtube and Twitter to name a few, I may not have noticed so much. Lesson learned. Now I spend time everyday building my traffic from these sources in addition to relying on Google.
I also want to mention to those that rely on all their marketing like Facebook for example. I know many affiliate marketers that just use facebook for the majority of their marketing. While this is effective, I am just going to say one thing. If you aren’t blogging and using other means such as Youtube for example, you are just leaving money laying on the table. Why on earth would you do that?
Another lesson I learned came during the Panda Penguin Google updates. I had all of my work on a free platform called Squidoo. I was rocking it on Squidoo. The updates hit and my thousands a month turned into hundreds. I can’t live on hundreds. This taught me a huge lesson. Long term, build your own sites. Don’t get too comfortable on just one. I know this Bubblenews is the hot new thing. I am not knocking it at all, just telling you to please no rely on it as your only source of income. It’s dangerous because they make the rules and they can change them at anytime like Squidoo did.
Moral of this story, spread yourself out. Don’t rely on one source for your traffic and don’t rely on just one means of marketing. If you blog, great, but add YouTube or email marketing to your plan as well. Diversity would be my top tip for affiliate marketers.
